Excessive Sugar Consumption

Excessive Sugar Consumption

Excessive sugar consumption is the root cause of many physiological breakdowns and obstacles in each of our bodies.

However, we each present with a variety of signs and symptoms. For example, it might show up with skin issues and inflammation, you may present with PMS and period irregularities, and someone else may have diabetes and obesity (1, 2, 3). You see, when you start searching for the root causes of symptoms instead of putting a bandaid on them, oftentimes you’re led to a few common lifestyle habits—one of them being excessive sugar consumption.

“Obesity, diabetes, leaky gut, heart disease, cancer, and dementia. These health problems don’t have just one cause. They’re multifactorial. But if you could pick one thing to eliminate from the modern diet—in order to dramatically reduce the risk for developing these conditions—you could make a strong case for eliminating refined sugar.” -Robb Wolf, LMNT Article

Robb Wolf is saying that if you want to alter just one lifestyle habit and see enhancements in all aspects of your health then choose to remove refined sugar from your diet. It’s true and amazing. And it worked for me. When I cut refined sugar out of my diet my skin instantly improved (like glowing), my periods became more regular, and I stopped having irritable bowel movements. My sleep quality improved as did my overall attitude on life because I was making much more positive decisions overall.

Now think about this in relation to conception, pregnancy, and healing postpartum. At BIRTHFIT we often relate everything back to the motherhood transition. The following research studies discuss the impacts of sugar consumption during pregnancy:

“We conclude that preconception and gestational sugar and alternative sweetener consumption may negatively impact pregnancy outcomes and offspring health and that there is a need for further observational, mechanistic and intervention research in this area.”https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30501650/

“High simple sugar intake during gestation may contribute to an excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) as well as to develop other pregnancy complications such as GDM, preeclampsia and preterm birth.”
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33266375/

Based on recent research findings, it looks like excessive sugar is going to have negative impacts on mother and baby. On the most straightforward level, excess sugar intake leads to unnecessary weight gain for you and baby. It also increases your chance of being diagnosed with gestational diabetes and predisposes your baby to skin issues, development and behavioral challenges, and asthma.

Sugar sneaks in our lives all the time. Here are some tips for limiting sugar in your life:

  • Avoid juices and smoothies. Eat the whole fruit.
  • Make your own condiments and sauces.
  • Check the ingredient list of condiments and sauces.
  • Consume PROTEIN, like Butcher Box.
  • Opt for stevia.
  • Stay hydrated; use LMNT
