Postpartum Recovery Timeline

People have expectations and assumptions about the postpartum recovery timeline. People want to know details. They don’t want to be left guessing. However, birth is unknown. The journey of birth is unknown and the other side is unknown, and influenced by the birth experience.

There are a variety of postpartum recovery timelines.  Each birth experience falls somewhere on the spectrum between unmedicated vaginal birth and abdominal surgery via a cesarean. Every person is unique and different; therefore, herbs and pharmaceuticals will influence and affect each person differently. For example, regarding an epidural some people will heave a headache while others will have permanent nerve damage (read more).

Postpartum recovery timelines vary, yet we have a general timeline. After our work in the maternal fitness and wellness space the last 8 to 10 years, we strongly advise a lying in period followed by 30 to 60 days of BIRTHFIT Basics (aka basic human movement), and then proceeding with an intentional strength and conditioning program like ours (HERE). We need a whole culture shift around the birth and motherhood transition here in America. We need to respect the postpartum period. The entire first year postpartum needs to be considered a sacred event.

There is no right or wrong postpartum outcome. There is no healing timeline that wins the game. Accept where you are and progress from this moment. We are here to support you on your journey,  but we can’t do the work for you. Lying in may be tough if you are used to being on the go. The basics are the boring stuff. Slow is fast is our favorite phrase that initial year postpartum.

If you’re not sure where to start, set up a consult HERE (bottom of page). Talk to Coach Leah or Coach Lindsey to determine where and how you should start your BIRTHFIT Postpartum Journey.
