Current Events: Structural Racism and Maternal Morbidity

Current Events: Structural Racism and Maternal Morbidity

Once a month we discuss current events in maternal health care. In this installment, we look at a study conducted to quantify the rates of severe maternal morbidity (SMM) based on the intersection of race/ethnicity and insurance status to see how they may impact structural racism. Keep reading for more details!

Race, Medicaid Coverage, and Equity in Maternal Morbidity

This study was conducted to examine the intersectionality of race/ethnicity and insurance status to help bring light to how multiple forms of oppression and racism contribute to the substantial inequities in SMM among Black birthing people.

Results of the study showed that rates of SMM among non-Hispanic Black, non-Hispanic Asian, and Hispanic birthing people relative to White birthing people were lower among Medicaid-covered deliveries than those with private insurance.

These results indicate that the risk for SMM among Black birthing people is not indicative of medical coverage.

This supports the notion that efforts should continue to focus on addressing structural racism and the impact on adverse maternal outcomes.
