Show Women Some Respect!

The other day CrossFit posted a picture of The CrossFit Games athlete Elisabeth Akinwale. The picture captured the moment of her taking off for a sprint during an event at the 2013 CrossFit Games. Many of the comments were supportive. However, there is always one jackass. This time the one jackass commented about the cellulite that is present in certain regions of her legs.

Let me remind you of what my elders taught me growing up: If you do not have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all!

Now that I’ve got that out of my system, let’s talk about cellulite.

Cellulite is natural. Cellulite is fat that is collected just beneath the surface of the skin. As we know, fat is needed for the body to operate optimally. It may occur in as many as 90% of females. And yes, it’s much more common in females than males because of the relationship to hormones like estrogen and prolactin.

In relationship to pregnancy, birth, and nursing, our bodies, as women, start to store fat for increased energy needs that come with pregnancy, labor/delivery, and then nursing. This process is instinctual, or primal. It is our bodies’ way of preparing for the unknown and to care for our offspring.

To say cellulite is ugly, especially in a mother, is like telling the mom that she has fallen short. DO NOT EVER say it, imply it, or be associated with anything negative directed to a mother. In regards to Elisabeth Akinwale, I do not know her, but I know she is doing the best she can at being a mother, an athlete, and a role model.

Show some respect to all the beautiful female athletes!

6 Rounds

10 Front Squats (15-65#)

400m Run

-Rest as much as needed between rounds-

  • Pick a weight that you can do 10 reps in a row.
  • Run 400m or row 500m.
  • Rest between rounds and/or do with a pregnant friend and alternate rounds. That way you are forced to wait.
