Wait to induce.

The value of waiting to start labor on its own

  • More than 4 out 10 women indicated that their caregiver tried to induce labor.
  • Over 50% of mothers experienced an induction (majority medically induced).
  • Pitocin (synthetic oxytocin) was used to induce in 80% of the women medically induced.

Why wait for labor to start on its own when someone can start it for you?

There are natural physiological processes still happening that are preparing your body and the baby’s body to enter the world. For one thing, the baby’s lungs are still forming. The baby is also still growing and storing fat, so that he will be able to regulate body temperature upon entering the real world. During the last few weeks in the mother’s belly, the mother passes antibodies over to the baby so that he can combat foreign invaders in the first few weeks of life.

When labor starts on its own, it is a natural process that occurs when the baby, placenta, uterus, and hormones are ready to roll. The cervix dilates and softens when it is signaled to. The uterus awakens when it hears from oyxtocin and indirectly by a rise in estrogen. The body is entirely integrated and every process plays off of another process. The body innately knows how to birth a baby.

By artificially inducing labor with pitocin, the contractions/surges are more intense and more difficult to manage. There is no surge of endorphins or that oxytocin euphoria. The uterus experiences stress as well as the baby because there is no complete relaxation between surges. Majority of the women that are induced via pitocin require an epidural. Before you know it, the entire ensemble of hormones is out of whack and there is no clear labor process.

So, what’s the point?

The point is this: wait as long as you can to have your baby. Listen to your body. There is no such thing as a due date. I’ve heard people call it a due month or due zone. Call it whatever you need to call it, but realize that the baby will come whenever he/she is ready.

There is too much good stuff happening the last few weeks of life to cut the party short. It would be like leaving the theater before the ending scene. The baby has his spot reserved for forty weeks. Let him enjoy the full forty weeks.
